My first year in Ink

February first was a big day for me.

It marks the first year of my commitment to create art with words or use words to create art if you’re the picky type.

I aim to please.

Well sometimes anyway.

The plan was to try and write a novel in November, but by Jan 4th realised I couldn't wait that long to start.

So start, I did.
Major (or minor - same difference) achievements:
In sequence, mostly

  • Completed 1st draft of something for the meantime that I will refer to as "the book about hell" 109 000 words (took five months - no outline)
  • Won camp nanowrimo July with 50k draft of "broken pumpkins" (really stoked about that one)
Picture
  • Had two Haiku published in Halloween Haiku 2  - I know it's no big deal but my words in a printed book? No matter how you look at it it's pretty cool
Picture
  • Launched a website with my name on it and produced a blog post every week since October (well except for Christmas time) here at the Artificial Blog or Unspoiled Reviews (every other week)
  • 75 word Flash fiction published on Paragraph Planet
Picture
09 09 2014 paragraph planet
  • Discovered Twitter, accrued 2000 followers since July 2014
and in the process have made some truly awesome friends
 - you ALL know you are
Picture
  • Won actual November nanowrimo with 50K and was a little more than chuffed to realise that I'd already developed a daily writing habit
Picture
  • Entered a number of competitions with a number of short stories. Haven't won any (or even placed for that matter) but that was not the point, I've taken the prompt, run with it, produced a piece, edited and entered it on time. All good skills to be practicing.
  • Have written at least 10 shorts that are in various states of repair. So more than a few still to play with. Mental Kombat anyone?
Picture
  • Have Beta read for complete strangers that I’ve met online, they aren't strangers any more.
  •  Have improved my prose and flash fiction by doing weekly drabble challenges with friends on twitter, 20 completed so far read a couple here
  • About to publish some shorts on Amazon, Kobo and Smashwords.
Anyway enough tooting my own horn, I’ve got editing to do.
Books don’t just write themselves you know?

Good luck with your own projects what ever they may be.

Come to think of it what are you working on?
What are you proud of?
Tell me

See you in a week!

Hi Myk,
On your 2/04/15 entry you mentioned that you were getting disquis for commenting. I am still entering all the same info like name, email, web in order to comment. So not seeing a difference yet. (You asked us to comment.) Will look forward to the change.

Your entry dated January 29— I can relate. I have posted a blog 2 to 3 times a week since March 2014. And you are right, it's hard balancing blogging and writing. I have my YA novel almost complete and want to release by summer so I am considering moving to a once a week blog post as well. Thanks for letting me know there is someone else out there finding it hard to balance. Best of luck.

Hey Clara
Sorry :( you want some real irony? Took disquis off blog yesterday hadn't updated noticeboard to say anything yet. Have had nothing but complaints about it so far. Seems that most folks weren't keen to sign up to it multiple times (plus twitter/Fb/etc) either still not happy with anything that i've found so far. Disquis gave me no end of trouble during the competition last year. Not at all happy with what weebly is offering either, but it seems to scare less people away, so it's a kind of rock/hard place situation. If you want to post some abuse via disquis try the link below:

How the hell can you find the time to post 3 times a week? I battle with the two and even now i'm thinking about taking the review posts down to on 'a when I feel like it basis'. They really are eating into writing time I should be spending on real projects. Glad to hear your edit is coming along swimmingly. Will come over to your side and say hi next gap I get. In the meantime all the best with your edits.

I guess we will have to live with commenting the way it is for the time being. Best of luck finding a solution.

I just recommended Little Plastic Castles on my blog.

Take a peek, when you have time, and leave a comment. Let me know if it's hard to leave a comment like filling in a bunch of info.

I am definitely thinking of going to a once a week blog. I was told by a woman, who has a very successful blog, that I needed to post every day!! Now her blog does draw a crowd, but she has yet to publish a novel. And I think she started like in 2009. So there you go.

I'll catch up to you on Twitter one of these days.

Clara you are AWESOME - Thank you so very very much!
Will wear my Best of the Beast badge proudly. Am even more chuffed to hear that I'm even marginally amusing and listed alongside Hugh Howie - in any capacity.
Have you listened to the 'Roundtable podcast'? If not you really need to check it out. It's a story workshopping extravaganza.

I'd recommend the one blog a week for workflow and such, I mean even with this little to maintain, I find I get sucked down the rabbit hole of maintenance often. The few times when I give it a miss, i know that people think i'm being rude.
Again sorry about the commenting.
Hope you're working hard and seriously come say hi when you Twitterise yourself - ill introduce you to of few other wonderful folks.

Roundtable podcast??? Tell me more or email me.

One blog a week. You've convinced! Along with my editor who is not so patiently awaiting my YA novel.
