I like this (facebook) I don’t like that (still facebook) I was all like hey dude no way and then she was all like one direction is actually like, a band. I’m sure as you’re reading this you can see where this is going.
I was reading a comic the other day (10 Grand by JMS, very, very worth the read but more on that another time) the main character sits down and a girl (potential client) starts telling him her story. When she’s done he says to her "I like how you don’t like"
I thought hell yeah, right on! I know more than a few adults who should know better and I’m more guilty of it than I care to admit myself. We all misuse it ‘like’ too dang much. So now I put it to you and the world. Let’s give LIKE back its power, let’s wrestle it out of the grip of mumbling celebrities and badly spoken teenagers. Let’s raise it out of the place it holds in the depths of mental flatulence and give it back its importance and purpose. When I like things I will do it sparingly and when you hear or read language equivalents of a thumbs up, you will know it was put there intentionally to show my unrelenting whole hearted approval of the NOUN that follows. Now who is with me? We can start the the movement to liberate ‘awesome’ & ‘epic’ some other time. |
